PRACTICAL RESOURCES
Starting a supportive conversation
For parents and caregivers
A calm conversation gives a child space to describe their experience. Choose a time when neither of you is rushing or already upset.
Listen before offering answers
- Begin with a gentle question about their day or feelings.
- Give them time to speak without interruptions.
- Keep your tone calm. Avoid eye-rolling, ridicule or comparisons.
- Ask whether they want you to listen or help think through a next step.
A small step today
Set aside a few quiet minutes together. Try: “What felt difficult today?” Follow their pace rather than pressing for a full explanation.
Remind your child you care about them. If they are not ready to talk, leave the invitation open and check in again.
