PRACTICAL RESOURCES
Supporting a child who finds reading difficult
For parents and teachers
Persistent difficulties with reading, writing or spelling deserve support, not labels such as “lazy”. Dyslexia is a learning difficulty and does not determine intelligence.
Work with the school
Discuss the specific tasks your child finds difficult. Ask about available learning support and a suitable assessment if difficulties persist. A qualified assessment helps clarify needs; a flyer or checklist does not establish a diagnosis.
Support confidence as well as learning
- Recognise the child’s strengths and interests.
- Discuss visual aids, accessible technology or smaller-group support with the teacher.
- Keep communication open between home and school.
Support arrangements differ by school and location. Ask which trained education professionals are available locally.
